Our History

In partnership with the Wisconsin Conference of the United Methodist Church, Howard and Ruth Rowland saw their dream of a retirement community providing dignity, wholeness and fulfillment of the human spirit become reality in 1967. Evergreen Manor, now called Evergreen, was opened in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, on the same site it sits on today, and the Rowland legacy was born.

Evergreen continues our legacy through sustained growth of opportunities, choices, and services. And because of the generosity of our donors, the Evergreen Foundation’s impact has been profound and has helped change the course of our history. Under the strategic direction of the Foundation, our rich history has a home for today and for many generations to come.

We invite you to visit Heritage Hall, just inside our front doors, and share with us in a memorable and significant display of our history, which celebrates our Founders, our Leadership, our Growth and our Benefactors who, collectively, have made possible the Evergreen of today. That which has been gifted to us in time, talent and treasure since our beginning is an inspiration for our future endeavors. Our past history paves the way for the future.
