Learning IN Retirement
Learning in Retirement at Evergreen in partnership with UW Oshkosh is a member-directed adult learning group promoting lifelong learning for older adults through a variety of stimulating opportunities. A committee of members choose topics or subjects,
take the lead in organizing classes, discussion groups or tours and participate in peer teaching and learning. There are classes and instructors, but no tests or grades.
Activities include one-time and serial classes and interest groups, tours of area businesses, attendance at performing arts events and other points of interest. Activities are presented by experts in their field and LIR members.
The organization started in the summer of 1997 by UW Oshkosh staff who invited community members to learn more about the program. More than 100 attended and helped plan Learning in Retirement activities. Since then, the organization has grown to more than 250 members throughout the Fox Valley.
LIR is self-funded by membership fees that support the administrative functions of the organization.
Member volunteers provide other essential services. Office, classroom and storage space is provided by Evergreen.

COMMITTEES
Learning in Retirement (LIR) is a member-led organization. LIR and the members themselves benefit greatly from taking on activities through committee involvement. This also allows individuals to become more familiar with a smaller group of people who have similar interests. LIR benefits greatly when members share their interests and expertise by getting involved. There are three committees that members can join: Administration and Finance, Curriculum, and Membership and Promotion. The Steering Committee is made up of the elected officers and committee chairs.
