GRANDPARENT SCAM ALERT from the Oshkosh Police Department:
It starts with a frantic phone call from someone pretending to be a “grandchild” or someone representing the “grandchild”. The caller will claim they are in trouble/ need help- in jail, in the hospital, etc and they need money (“post their bail” or “pay attorney’s fees”)
The caller will plead to the grandparent not to tell anyone about the situation and will pressure the grandparent to send the money quickly. Sometimes the scammer will send a driver to pick up the cash.
The caller is not their “grandchild” or anyone representing their “grandchild”- it is a con artist.
***An easy way to verify if it is your grandchild on the phone (or if they are involved in a situation), is to hang up the phone and call your grandchild directly. ***
